WILLEMSTAD – Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas wants Curaçao to further strengthen its preparedness for major crises and natural disasters. Following the recent severe earthquakes in neighboring Venezuela, the prime minister visited the national crisis center in Rio Canario to discuss the island’s emergency response capabilities.
During the working visit, Pisas met with the national disaster coordinator, the Fire Department and members of the Curaçao Urban Search and Rescue team (CUSAR).
CUSAR recently assisted with rescue operations in Venezuela following the earthquakes and shared its experiences and lessons learned with the prime minister.
Pisas expressed his appreciation for the team’s commitment and professionalism, stating that he is extremely proud of the work carried out by Curaçao’s emergency responders.
The government now intends to further strengthen its cooperation with CUSAR in order to raise the level of national crisis management on the island.
CUSAR has specialized expertise in disaster response, search and rescue operations, emergency assistance and crisis coordination. According to the government, closer cooperation with the team will contribute to improving Curaçao’s ability to respond effectively to future emergencies.
The visit comes as authorities continue to evaluate and improve disaster preparedness measures, including coordination between emergency services and specialized response teams.
