WILLEMSTAD – The future maritime development of Buskabaai will depend less on completing the cleanup of the Asphalt Lake than on when Pier 10 becomes available, according to officials involved in the redevelopment plans.
Pier 10, owned by 2BAYS, represents the main connection between the two separate projects.
Asphalt Lake Recovery is expected to continue using the pier for another two to two-and-a-half years to export asphalt recovered from the Asphalt Lake.
Only after those export operations conclude can the full maritime opening of Buskabaai to the sea move forward.
Officials stressed that this does not mean the entire Asphalt Lake remediation project must be finished before Buskabaai can be developed. Cleanup work at the lake is expected to continue well beyond the period during which Pier 10 is occupied.
Once the pier becomes available, the remaining Asphalt Lake remediation should no longer present a direct obstacle to the bay's maritime redevelopment.
Meanwhile, additional environmental investigations are scheduled for 2026. These studies will examine both the seabed and contamination within Buskabaai.
The results will help determine future decisions on financing, environmental remediation, dredging operations, new infrastructure and the bay's ultimate maritime role.
Although planning continues, authorities have not yet approved the construction of a new port, nor have they announced a project budget, financing model or construction schedule. For now, preparations for Buskabaai's future can continue while cleanup operations at the Asphalt Lake proceed independently.
