Local, Politics, | By Correspondent April 17, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao Parliament will hold a public meeting next Thursday to discuss a proposal to rename the national holiday celebrated on July 2.

The proposal will be presented by Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Sithree van Heydoorn, after which members of Parliament will enter into debate on the issue.

The holiday is currently known as Dia di Bandera, but the minister has put forward a proposal to rename it Dia di Himno i Bandera. An alternative proposal, Dia di Kòrsou, will also be considered during the session.

According to the minister, a new name should help strengthen national identity and promote a greater sense of patriotism among the population.

Former politician Rignald Lak, who has long advocated for the name Dia di Kòrsou, described the discussion as an important step and expressed confidence that the proposal could gain broad support in Parliament.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and will be open to the public.
