WILLEMSTAD – A planned public meeting of the Curaçao Parliament to address millions in additional government funding has been cancelled, delaying scrutiny over a controversial financial allocation.

The session, which had been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 7 at 9:00 a.m., was expected to include a deliberation with the Minister of Finance regarding an extra 43.6 million guilders allocated to the Government Accountant’s Bureau (SOAB).

The funds were reportedly intended, among other things, to hire additional personnel and manage government-related funds.

According to an official notice signed by Parliament clerk S. R. Cijntje, the meeting has now been cancelled until further notice.

The session had originally been part of earlier parliamentary discussions held on January 27 and February 6, before being postponed and placed back on the agenda for May.

No explanation was provided for the latest cancellation.

The postponed debate is considered significant, as it concerns public spending and the role of SOAB in overseeing government finances.

The issue of the additional funding has drawn attention due to its size and purpose, particularly in a context where financial transparency and accountability remain key topics in Curaçao’s political landscape.

With the meeting now cancelled, questions surrounding the allocation and management of the 43.6 million guilders remain unanswered for the time being.

Parliament is expected to announce a new date for the session at a later stage.
