WILLEMSTAD – Certain neighborhoods and districts in Curaçao are disproportionately affected by poverty, with Paradijs, Scharloo, Wishi and Otrobanda ranking among the most impacted areas.
In 2023, Paradijs recorded the highest multidimensional poverty levels, followed closely by Scharloo and Wishi.
The report shows that poverty is not evenly distributed across the island, with some areas experiencing significantly higher levels of deprivation than others.
At the neighborhood level, Vers stands out as the most affected, with nearly one in three residents experiencing multidimensional poverty.
However, areas such as Brievengat and Ser’i Papaya contribute more to overall poverty figures due to their larger populations.
The findings highlight the importance of geographically targeted policies to address inequalities between communities.
