Opposition Seeks Accountability for Annual Government Funding to FKP
WILLEMSTAD – Opposition party PAR is seeking answers about millions of guilders allocated annually for the maintenance of Curaçao's public housing stock after Fundashon Kas Popular (FKP) announced it would suspend maintenance work due to a lack of funding.
In a series of parliamentary questions directed at Minister Charles Cooper, PAR leader Quincy Girigorie asks whether the government has fulfilled its financial obligations under a 2021 management agreement with FKP.
According to the agreement, the government is required to provide FKP with five million guilders annually for maintenance of public housing units. PAR wants to know whether those payments were made in both 2025 and 2026 and, if not, why the funding was not provided.
The opposition party is also questioning how a semi-public organization responsible for managing public housing could reach a point where it can no longer guarantee basic maintenance services.
In addition, PAR is seeking greater transparency regarding the overall finances of FKP. The party notes that annual financial statements have not been publicly available and asks whether government can guarantee that approximately 12 million guilders provided annually to FKP are being used for their intended purpose rather than for other projects, including Mi Kas Awor and Wechi Management Company.
Girigorie argues that the public deserves a clear understanding of how taxpayer funds are being spent and how the situation deteriorated to the point where maintenance on public housing has reportedly been halted.
"The community needs clarity about the use of public funds and how this situation reached a point where maintenance of public housing must be suspended," Girigorie wrote.
The questions could lead to renewed scrutiny of both the government's housing policies and the management of public housing funds.
