WILLEMSTAD – Parliamentarian Shaheen Elhage (PAR) is asking the Curaçao government to publish its legal and policy evaluation regarding an international law issue connected to trade and public procurement.
The request follows a 2025 open letter submitted by eight Curaçao organizations, which called on the government to examine its obligations under international law and consider whether existing policies should be adjusted.
Elhage argues that the government should provide transparency about how the request was assessed and whether an independent legal review was conducted.
The PAR parliamentarian specifically requested that the government publish its own legal and policy evaluation regarding the matter and guarantee that any future decisions are based on an independent assessment by Curaçao, taking into account all relevant interests.
According to Elhage, public confidence depends on governments clearly explaining their decisions and showing that important issues are evaluated carefully and independently.
The parliamentarian emphasized that Curaçao’s autonomy is not only about having the ability to make its own decisions, but also about the responsibility to take concerns from the population seriously and provide clear explanations for government actions.
