Ombudsman Launches Survey on Oversight of Elderly Care Homes in Curaçao

Local, | By Correspondent April 2, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Ombudsman of Curaçao will begin a survey on Thursday to examine government oversight of nursing homes and elderly care facilities on the island.

The survey forms part of a broader investigation covering the period from October 2020 to October 2025. According to the Ombudsman, the focus will be on the supervisory role of the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature during those years.

The initiative aims to gather insights from (former) residents of care homes and their immediate family members. Their experiences are expected to provide a clearer picture of how oversight has been carried out in practice and where potential shortcomings may exist.

The questionnaire is specifically intended for residents and their relatives. Staff members of care institutions are asked not to participate.

Participation in the survey is voluntary, and all responses will be processed anonymously. The survey is available through the Ombudsman’s official website and social media channels, and can be completed in Papiamentu, Dutch and English.

The findings are expected to contribute to a better understanding of the effectiveness of oversight in the elderly care sector and may inform future policy decisions.
