Noble Discoverer Prepares to Leave Curaçao for Major Offshore Drilling Campaign in Suriname

Main News, Caribbean, | By Correspondent November 4, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Noble Discoverer, a large offshore drilling rig anchored in Caracasbaai since late September, is preparing for a major assignment off the coast of Suriname, where it is expected to begin drilling operations in early 2027 under a long-term contract with French energy company TotalEnergies.

According to the latest fleet status report published by Noble Corporation on October 26, the contract for the semi-submersible drilling rig is scheduled to begin in December 2026. However, actual drilling operations are not expected to start until early next year.

Noble Discoveres currently anchored in Caracasbaai

Shipping information available on Wednesday, November 4, confirms that the Noble Discoverer remains anchored in Caracasbaai, where it has been undergoing maintenance and operational preparations for its next assignment.

The rig arrived in Curaçao on September 26 after completing work for Petrobras off the coast of Colombia.

Maintenance and Preparations in Caracasbaai

During its stay in Curaçao, the Noble Discoverer is undergoing technical maintenance and logistical preparations necessary for its upcoming offshore drilling campaign.

The work includes replacing components of the propulsion system, replenishing fuel and supplies, and carrying out crew changes.

These activities are essential for preparing the installation for an extended period of operations at sea.

The Noble Discoverer is a semi-submersible drilling rig built in 2009. It is designed to operate in water depths exceeding 3,000 meters and can accommodate up to 180 personnel.

Its presence in Caracasbaai demonstrates the importance of deepwater locations capable of accommodating large offshore installations.

Curaçao's maritime infrastructure provides opportunities for maintenance, provisioning, technical services, and personnel transfers involving vessels and drilling platforms operating throughout the Caribbean and northern South America.

Contract Begins in December, Drilling Expected in January

Although the Noble Discoverer's contract with TotalEnergies officially begins in December, this does not mean that drilling operations will immediately commence.

TotalEnergies announced on September 19 that its drilling campaign and offshore installation activities in Suriname are expected to begin in early 2027.

Artur Nunes da Silva, Director of TotalEnergies in Suriname, confirmed to Surinamese radio station ABC in late October that the initial stages of the drilling process are scheduled for January 2027.

The December date mentioned in Noble Corporation's fleet report therefore refers to the contractual deployment period rather than the actual commencement of drilling.

No official departure date has been announced for the Noble Discoverer to leave Curaçao.

The installation is expected to remain in Caracasbaai until the necessary preparations have been completed and arrangements for its next assignment are finalized.

Curaçao's Role in Regional Offshore Energy Development

The presence of the Noble Discoverer highlights Curaçao's potential role as a logistical and technical support location for the growing offshore oil and gas industry in the Caribbean region.

The island's deepwater facilities and established maritime services make it suitable for accommodating large offshore installations that require maintenance, supplies, fuel, and crew changes.

As neighboring countries such as Suriname expand their offshore energy activities, demand for specialized maritime support services may create opportunities for Curaçao-based companies.

The Noble Discoverer's stay illustrates how the island can participate in regional energy developments even when exploration and production activities take place outside Curaçao's territorial waters.

For now, the drilling rig remains in Caracasbaai, preparing for its next major assignment.

Its departure will mark the beginning of another phase in the development of Suriname's offshore oil industry, with drilling operations expected to get underway in January 2027.
