WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao's national football team is not expected to receive a formal homecoming celebration or parade on the island following its historic FIFA World Cup campaign.
According to local media reports, the Curaçao Football Federation (FFK) has cancelled the special flight that was scheduled to pick up the national selection from Boca Raton, Florida. After discussions, the players reportedly decided not to travel to Curaçao for a celebration, but instead to continue directly from the United States to Europe.
A spokesperson for the FFK said a formal celebration is not possible because most of the players must soon report back to their clubs, while others are beginning their vacation period after a demanding tournament schedule.
Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Sithree van Heydoorn said this morning that he could not yet provide further details on the situation. According to the minister, decisions regarding the team's return and any possible celebration fall under the responsibility of the football federation, not the government. However, he said he would contact the FFK president to obtain more clarity.
The news has disappointed many fans, who had hoped to welcome the Blue Wave home after one of the greatest sporting achievements in Curaçao's history.
Although Curaçao's World Cup dream ended in the group stage, the team leaves the tournament with enormous national pride. The Blue Wave became the smallest nation ever to participate in a FIFA World Cup, scored its first-ever World Cup goal, and earned its first-ever point with a historic draw against Ecuador.
The campaign also marked another milestone for head coach Dick Advocaat. At 78, the Dutchman made history as the oldest head coach ever at a FIFA World Cup. According to the FIFA Museum, Curaçao is also the third country Advocaat has led to a World Cup, after the Netherlands in 1994 and South Korea in 2006.
It was also the first time Advocaat guided a country through its debut appearance at a major tournament.
While there may be no official parade, the team's achievement has already been celebrated across Curaçao and among Curaçaoans abroad. For many supporters, the Blue Wave's World Cup journey will remain a defining moment in the island's sporting history.
