WILLEMSTAD – There will be no general exemption from school attendance when Curaçao national football team plays matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
This was confirmed in a letter from Sithree van Heydoorn to school boards across Curaçao.
According to the minister, the World Cup period coincides with an important stage in the academic year, during which schools complete educational programs and conduct examinations. For that reason, the regular school schedule will remain in effect and schools will not be collectively closed during Curaçao’s matches.
However, school boards will have the authority to consider individual requests for leave or absence from both students and staff members.
The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport emphasized that school management remains responsible for evaluating such requests and urged school directors to handle them carefully and transparently.
