WILLEMSTAD – A new submarine fiber-optic cable will soon connect Curaçao directly to Venezuela, strengthening digital connectivity between the two countries and positioning Curaçao as an important telecommunications hub in the region.
Telecommunications company Liberty Networks, the parent company of Flow, announced that it will partner with Venezuela's state-owned telecommunications provider CANTV to build the new cable system, named Fenix.
The approximately 380-kilometer cable will run directly from Curaçao to Camuri, near Venezuela's capital, Caracas.
According to Liberty Networks, the new connection will significantly increase digital capacity while reducing network latency to less than four milliseconds, providing faster and more reliable data transmission between the two countries.
In Curaçao, the Fenix cable will connect to Liberty Networks' existing international infrastructure, which includes links to a major data center in Miami. This integration is expected to strengthen Curaçao's role as a key gateway for Venezuela's international internet and data traffic.
Liberty Networks President Ray Collins said the project will contribute to the continued digital development of the Caribbean region by improving connectivity and expanding telecommunications infrastructure.
The companies have not yet disclosed the project's investment cost or announced when the new cable is expected to become operational.
The Fenix project represents another step in expanding Curaçao's strategic position as a regional communications and digital connectivity hub, supporting both international data traffic and future technological development.
