New European Patent System Generates Additional Revenue for Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD – A relatively new European patent system is generating additional income for Curaçao through Kingdom agreements tied to Dutch and European patent taxes.

According to a confidential report by the Auditdienst Rijk, Curaçao received more than €504,000 in 2025 from revenues linked to Dutch and European patent registrations.

Part of that money now comes from the European Unitary Patent system, a newer framework introduced within Europe to simplify patent protection across multiple countries through a single registration process.

The report states that the additional revenues generated by the Unitary Patent system are collected by Octrooicentrum Nederland and partially redistributed to Curaçao and Sint Maarten based on existing Kingdom agreements.

In total, Dutch and European patent taxes generated more than €52.5 million in 2025.

Under the current revenue-sharing arrangement, Curaçao receives 0.96 percent of those revenues, while Sint Maarten receives 0.24 percent.

The audit confirmed that all transfers were properly processed and corresponded with official patent registration systems and financial records.

The findings highlight an often-overlooked financial relationship within the Kingdom of the Netherlands involving intellectual property rights and patent administration.

Patent systems play an important role in protecting inventions, industrial designs, technologies, pharmaceuticals, and other innovations by granting temporary exclusive rights to inventors and companies.

The growing role of the Unitary Patent system reflects broader changes in international intellectual property management and European economic integration.

For Curaçao, the revenues represent a small but stable external income stream tied to international patent activity rather than local taxation.
