WILLEMSTAD – The design for the long-awaited renovation and expansion of the Courthouse of Justice in Curaçao has been unveiled, marking the next phase in a project aimed at transforming the historic judicial complex into a modern, secure and accessible facility while preserving its architectural heritage.
Construction will begin with the demolition of the non-historic sections of the complex, scheduled to start in July.

Under the redevelopment plans, the courthouse's historic core will be preserved, while extensions added during the 1980s will be demolished and replaced with new buildings featuring modern office space, meeting areas and improved facilities for judicial staff.
The project also includes the construction of seven courtrooms and the renovation of the courthouse's historic courtroom, ensuring it remains an integral part of the complex.
According to the design team, the new courthouse will significantly improve both security and accessibility. Separate circulation routes will be created for court employees, visitors and detainees, enhancing safety and the efficient operation of judicial proceedings.
The redevelopment will also improve public access to the area surrounding the courthouse. A new pedestrian passageway will connect Wilhelminaplein with the Waterfort side of the city, while additional seating areas will be created to enhance the public space.
The Court said the project is designed to provide Curaçao with a judicial complex that meets the demands of the future without compromising the historic character of one of Willemstad's landmark buildings.
Once completed, the renovated courthouse is expected to offer a more efficient working environment for the judiciary while improving the experience for lawyers, litigants and members of the public visiting the courts.
