WILLEMSTAD – Aqualectra had disconnected 1,672 customers from water and electricity services because of payment arrears as of March 18, highlighting the financial pressure facing part of Curaçao’s population.
The figure was reported this week and comes at a time when household debt and the cost of living are receiving increasing attention on the island.
Disconnection is generally one of the final steps taken when customers fail to meet their payment obligations. For households already struggling financially, however, losing access to electricity or water can deepen existing social problems.
The number is particularly significant when considered alongside recent findings from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
According to results from the 2025 Social Survey, 53.6 percent of households reported difficulty meeting their debt obligations. The MAN-PIN faction recently cited that figure in calling on the government to develop more concrete policies to address problematic household debt.
The Council of Advice has also placed poverty and economic security high on the public agenda. In its latest annual report, the advisory body argued that combating poverty is not simply an optional policy objective but relates to the government's responsibility to safeguard fundamental social rights.
The combination of household debt and utility arrears illustrates how financial problems can quickly move beyond the ability to purchase non-essential goods. Electricity and water are among the most basic monthly household expenses.
Curaçao has simultaneously been recording stronger macroeconomic and government financial results. Tax and social premium revenues during the second quarter of 2026 exceeded the budgeted amount, while tourism and other parts of the economy continue to expand.
That contrast is likely to intensify the debate over whether Curaçao's economic recovery is reaching financially vulnerable households.
