WILLEMSTAD – Two performances of the musical Piar, e Último Bataya will be staged in Curaçao this week in celebration of World Theatre Day, highlighting the island’s cultural heritage and historical legacy.

The production will be performed on March 27 and 28 at Teatro Aula Habaai as part of the annual international observance, which promotes the role of theatre in fostering dialogue and cultural exchange. This year’s global theme focuses on peace.

The musical tells the story of Manuel Piar, a freedom fighter with Curaçaoan roots who played a key role in the struggle against colonial rule in the region. His life and legacy continue to resonate, with themes of freedom, equality, and justice that remain relevant today.

The production, developed by Teatro KadaKen, has previously been used in educational settings, where students engaged in discussions on topics such as democracy, identity, and human rights following the performances.

Organizers say the goal of the upcoming shows is to introduce a broader audience to theatre and its social impact, while also reconnecting the public with an important chapter of Curaçao’s history.

Tickets for the performances are available through various outlets and online platforms.
