MP Ruisandro Cijntje Raises Concerns Over Coastal Development at Pyrmont Hotel

WILLEMSTAD – Member of Parliament Ruisandro Cijntje has expressed concern about ongoing development along Curaçao's southern coastline, where a large beach is being created as part of the Pyrmont Hotel project.

According to the parliamentarian, the development involves the use of steel sheet piles to reclaim and shape the beachfront. Cijntje said the project is significantly altering the appearance of the coastline and questioned whether sufficient policies are in place to regulate such developments.

He described the current situation as "very unsightly" and argued that Curaçao needs a comprehensive coastal development policy to guide future projects and protect the island's shoreline.

Cijntje emphasized that while tourism development is important for the island's economy, it should be balanced with careful planning and environmental considerations to preserve the natural character of Curaçao's coastline.

The comments come as construction continues on the new Pyrmont Hotel, which recently announced it will become the first hotel in the world to use Ocean Water Air Conditioning (OWAC) technology for its cooling system.

It is not yet known whether the parliamentarian intends to submit formal parliamentary questions or request a review of the project by the relevant government authorities.
