MP Monte Seeks Clarity on XCG 8 Million Cleaning Budget and Proposes Incentives for Cleaner Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD – MFK Member of Parliament Ishahier Monte is asking the government for clarity on the approximately XCG 8 million reportedly reserved for cleaning and maintenance efforts across Curaçao.

In a letter to the government, Monte says the cleanliness of the island is a matter of public health, quality of life, environmental protection and Curaçao’s image as a tourism destination.

According to the MP, keeping Curaçao clean must be a shared responsibility between the government and citizens. He is therefore asking how the XCG 8 million will be used and whether the funds are intended for one specific project or a broader structural maintenance program.

Monte also wants to know whether contractors will be selected through a transparent process and in which neighborhoods, streets, beaches, mondi areas and public spaces the cleaning activities will take place.

In addition to requesting clarification, Monte is proposing what he describes as an innovative incentive system to encourage public participation. Under the proposal, citizens could receive compensation for voluntarily bringing waste to the landfill or authorized collection centers.

According to Monte, such a system could help reduce illegal dumping in neighborhoods, natural areas and public spaces.

The MP is also asking whether part of the available funds could be used for initiatives that directly benefit families and individuals facing vulnerable or urgent social circumstances.

“Cleanliness is important, but public investment must be transparent, effective and produce real benefits for the people,” Monte said. “We want to ensure that every florin invested contributes both to a cleaner Curaçao and to a socially stronger Curaçao.”

Monte says he expects the government to provide clear and detailed answers so the public can better understand how the money will be used and how the investment will benefit the island.
