WILLEMSTAD – MFK Member of Curaçao Parliament Ishahier Monte has held talks with Aqualectra director Neysa Isenia to discuss possible solutions to ongoing issues related to water and electricity debts affecting residents.
The meeting followed a letter sent by Monte to Aqualectra management, raising concerns about the financial burden many households face. During the discussion, both parties explored potential measures to address outstanding debts and improve access to essential utilities.

MP Monte
Monte described the meeting as productive and expressed appreciation for the swift response and invitation from Isenia. He emphasized that the current situation is the result of long-standing structural problems, including past policies that allowed residents to receive water and electricity services without sustainable payment solutions, ultimately leading to mounting debts.
According to Monte, social welfare agency SOAW should no longer bear the financial burden of these debts, given the range of other social needs requiring funding. He stressed the importance of developing a lasting solution that allows residents to manage payments while ensuring continued access to utilities.
One proposal discussed involves introducing a manageable monthly payment plan, with residents contributing between 15 and 25 guilders per month. Monte argued that such a system would allow households to meet their daily expenses while enabling Aqualectra to generate steady income.
The issue of penalties and fines was also raised, with Monte suggesting these should be reconsidered, as many residents have reached their current financial situation due to broader systemic factors. Both parties acknowledged the need for a more balanced and compassionate approach.

Additional concerns discussed include cases where deceased account holders have left behind debts, making it difficult for family members to transfer utility accounts into their own names. These situations are expected to be reviewed as part of a broader effort to find workable solutions.
Monte stated that all proposals will be evaluated further, with the aim of developing policies that better support the population. He added that addressing these longstanding issues will require cooperation and a commitment to correcting past mistakes.
The parliamentarian indicated that he will continue to closely monitor the situation and push for concrete measures, while urging relevant institutions to take action to support vulnerable households across Curaçao.
