MP Camelia-Römer Questions Conditions at Juvenile Facility After Unrest

Local, Politics, | By Correspondent April 17, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – MAN-PIN Member of Parliament Suzy Camelia-Römer is set to question Minister of Justice Shalten Hato about conditions at the Juvenile Justice Institution Curaçao (JJIC) following recent unrest at the facility.

The disturbance, which occurred earlier this week, was reportedly triggered by dissatisfaction among youths over a lack of essential items such as toilet paper, soap, and toothpaste. If confirmed, Camelia-Römer said the situation could constitute a serious violation of human rights.

Minister Hato has since stated that these basic provisions are available within the institution. However, the MP wants clarification on whether the supplies are effectively reaching all youths housed at JJIC.

Camelia-Römer also raised broader concerns about recurring issues at the facility, including reports of tensions between staff and residents, as well as previous escape incidents. She is seeking answers on the underlying causes of the unrest and whether structural problems are being adequately addressed.

During the parliamentary question hour, she plans to press the minister for clear information on current conditions and the measures being taken to ensure that all youths are treated in a humane and dignified manner.
