WILLEMSTAD – MFK Member of Parliament Ishahier Monte is asking the Pisas government whether it still intends to reopen Campo Alegre and what rules would govern prostitution at the facility if operations resume.
Monte submitted a series of questions to Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas on October 6, seeking clarification about the current status of plans involving the former Campo Alegre complex.
The MP wants to know whether the government has developed an updated policy for prostitution in Curaçao covering regulation, supervision, public health and safety.
If Campo Alegre is reopened, Monte is asking which legal, health and security measures would be introduced to ensure activities at the facility comply with the law and respect human rights.
He also wants the government to explain how reopening Campo Alegre could contribute to combating illegal prostitution, human trafficking and other forms of exploitation.
The former Campo Alegre has for years been the subject of debate over prostitution policy, regulation and the future use of the property.
Monte said the issue has significant social and economic implications and that renewed questions within the community require clear answers from the government.
Among the central questions is whether there is now a concrete timetable for restarting operations at the complex.
Monte asked Pisas to indicate whether an expected reopening date exists and, if so, to provide Parliament with details of the government's planning.
The questions concerning Campo Alegre were submitted together with a separate series of questions about the possible reactivation of the Curaçao refinery. Monte said both outstanding issues affect employment, investment, economic development and government policy in important sectors.
He has requested that the Prime Minister respond to the questions in writing.
