Misunderstandings and Administrative Burden Weigh on Curaçao’s Education System

Local, | By Correspondent March 31, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Widespread misunderstandings about how Curaçao’s education system works are contributing to unnecessary pressure on students, parents, and schools, according to a recent report by the Inspectorate of Education.

Many parents believe that students must “pass” primary education or that a final exam determines their future placement. In reality, the system is designed to assess overall development rather than rely on a single test.

These misconceptions have led to increased anxiety and unrealistic expectations, while also influencing how schools operate.

At the same time, schools are dealing with a growing administrative burden. Teachers are required to complete multiple student reports, often including detailed personal and background information.

The Inspectorate notes that this duplication of work not only reduces efficiency but also raises concerns about privacy and data management. In many cases, the reports focus more on administrative details than on meaningful insights into a student’s learning progress and potential.

The report recommends simplifying the system by introducing a single, comprehensive student report that better reflects individual development while reducing paperwork for teachers.
