WILLEMSTAD – Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports (ESKD) Sithree van Heydoorn has expressed support for a new initiative aimed at preserving Curaçao's culinary heritage by passing traditional knowledge and entrepreneurial skills on to the next generation of local chefs.
The minister, accompanied by members of his cabinet and representatives of the Ministry's Culture and Sports Sector, recently received renowned Chef Charlwin "Broertje" Marshall, together with Kristoffer Kierindongo, president of the Manumit Foundation, and the foundation's secretary, René Hooi. During the meeting, they presented the "Broertje's Legacy Program," an initiative designed to safeguard the island's rich culinary traditions.
The program centers on a mentorship model in which experienced chefs will train aspiring culinary professionals, sharing not only their cooking techniques but also business knowledge essential for building successful careers in the hospitality industry.
In addition to mentoring, the project includes the development of an authentic Curaçao-made culinary product and the production of a documentary series that will chronicle the transfer of the island's culinary heritage to future generations.
Kristoffer Kierindongo, president of the Manumit Foundation, is recognized for developing innovative cultural concepts that combine gastronomy, heritage and identity. Through projects such as the Vittle Art restaurant concept, he has worked to promote Curaçao's cultural heritage in modern and sustainable ways.
During the presentation, Minister Van Heydoorn praised the initiative and highlighted the importance of preserving the legacy of Chef Charlwin "Broertje" Marshall. He noted that the program aligns closely with the Charlwin (Broertje) Marshall Award, an official national cultural award established by government decree on August 22, 2019. The award recognizes the achievements and talent of both emerging and professional local chefs.
According to the ministry, the Broertje's Legacy Program supports the government's broader vision of strengthening Curaçao's cultural identity by investing in young talent, encouraging cultural entrepreneurship and ensuring that the island's unique culinary traditions continue to thrive for generations to come.
