WILLEMSTAD – Minister of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning Charles Cooper van Heydoorn called on Curaçaoans to embrace unity, reject negativity and continue building on the national pride inspired by the island's historic FIFA World Cup appearance during his address on the occasion of Dia di Himno i Bandera 2026.

Speaking during the national celebration, Van Heydoorn said Curaçao's national anthem and flag represent far more than official symbols, describing them as expressions of the island's identity, history and dignity as a nation.

"Our anthem and flag reflect the struggles, dreams, sacrifices and hopes of the generations that helped build the Curaçao we love and defend today," the minister said.

He noted that seeing the Curaçao flag flying proudly serves as a reminder of the strength of the island's people, the beauty of the country and the unity that should transcend political and social differences.

Van Heydoorn also referred to the country's historic participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, recalling the emotional moment when Curaçao's national anthem was played during the tournament's opening ceremony.

"When our anthem was heard with respect, as it was during the opening of this year's World Cup, it touched our souls and strengthened our commitment to the values that sustain our society—freedom, responsibility, solidarity and love for Curaçao," he said.

The minister paid tribute to the men and women who have contributed to strengthening Curaçao's cultural and national identity, saying their dedication should inspire future generations to continue building the country with confidence and responsibility.

He urged citizens to protect the values that unite the island and to ensure that future generations understand the deeper meaning of the country's national symbols.

"We have the duty to build, together, a country where every citizen feels valued, respected and called upon to contribute to the general well-being of our people," Van Heydoorn said.

Looking ahead, the minister called for what he described as a change in mentality, encouraging Curaçaoans to move away from sensationalism and negativity and instead focus on constructive efforts that benefit the country.

"We must choose a new mindset where sensationalism and negativity are no longer our priority," he said.

Van Heydoorn also called for maintaining the spirit of national unity that swept across the island during the World Cup, referring to it as the "Blue Wave."

He said that momentum should become a permanent movement capable of generating greater economic growth, expanding tourism and creating increased prosperity for Curaçao.

"A Blue Wave that will never die again—a Blue Wave that will bring us more economic growth, more tourism and greater prosperity," he concluded before ending his speech with the words, "Long live Curaçao!"
