WILLEMSTAD – Minister of Social Development, Labor and Welfare Charetti America-Francisca has issued a strong call for collective action to tackle poverty on Curaçao, describing it as both a personal mission and a national priority.

In a recent interview, the minister emphasized that poverty is not an abstract issue for her, but a lived reality she understands firsthand. “It is not just a topic for discussion,” she indicated, “but an opportunity to change the reality that many families on our island face every day.”

America-Francisca stated that combating poverty remains one of the central priorities of her ministry. She stressed that the issue goes beyond statistics, affecting real people, families, and the future of the country.

The minister called on the wider community to move beyond words and take concrete action. According to her, the government is working on a new approach focused on targeted and active intervention, aimed at creating lasting change rather than temporary relief.

She also highlighted the importance of empowerment, noting that individuals who receive support today should be given the tools to help others in the future. “The goal is to create sustainable progress,” she said.

The Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW) continues to work daily to improve conditions for vulnerable groups, with an emphasis on long-term impact. America-Francisca expressed her ambition to transform the ministry into one that delivers visible and measurable results, placing people at the center of its policies.

Acknowledging the scale of the challenge, the minister described the road ahead as long but achievable. “The path is long, but we will get there,” she said, framing it as a commitment to continue working toward a stronger, more united Curaçao.

She also pointed to the importance of collaboration with partners, organizations, and communities to address the issue effectively.

The remarks come amid ongoing concerns about poverty levels on the island, as authorities face increasing pressure to deliver concrete solutions that improve living conditions and provide greater opportunities for those most in need.
