WILLEMSTAD – MFK Member of Parliament Ishahier Monte has submitted a series of parliamentary questions urging the government to preserve Curaçao's historic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup through a professionally produced documentary and a broader national legacy program.
Invoking Article 96 of Parliament's Rules of Procedure, Monte argues that Curaçao's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup represents far more than a sporting achievement. He says it is a milestone of historical, cultural, educational and national significance that deserves to be documented for future generations.
In his written questions, Monte notes that Curaçao became the smallest nation ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, an achievement that was officially recognized by Guinness World Records. He says the accomplishment elevated the island's international profile and demonstrated that investment in local talent, long-term planning and discipline can produce results at the highest level of world football.
According to Monte, the story behind the qualification extends well beyond the matches themselves.
"The world saw the final result, but not the years of vision, sacrifice, leadership, resilience and teamwork that made it possible," he wrote.
The parliamentarian is proposing the production of a documentary that would chronicle the entire journey, from the early vision and preparations to the qualification campaign and Curaçao's participation in the tournament. He believes the film should also document the emergence of the "Blue Wave" movement, which united the island behind its national football team.
Monte argues that such a documentary would serve as both a historical record and an educational tool, inspiring future generations through themes such as perseverance, discipline, leadership and national pride.
He is asking the government whether it is willing to support or facilitate the production of such a documentary and whether it recognizes the World Cup campaign and the Blue Wave movement as part of Curaçao's national heritage.
