MFK Defends Charles Cooper Amid Growing Criticism Over Land Registry Delays

WILLEMSTAD – MFK parliamentarian Frenciss Lourens says the problems at the Land Registry (Domeinbeheer) are the result of years of structural neglect and cannot be solved overnight through what he described as “political theater.”

In a statement issued on behalf of the ruling party, Lourens expressed full confidence in Minister of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning Charles Cooper and defended the government’s handling of the ongoing crisis surrounding land requests and administrative delays at Domeinbeheer.

According to Lourens, the ministry inherited a highly complex situation that had not been properly addressed by previous governments for many years. He argued that the large backlog of land requests, administrative deficiencies and organizational problems accumulated gradually over time and did not emerge suddenly.

The MFK parliamentarian stated that the current government is now working on structural reforms aimed at modernizing processes, improving oversight mechanisms and restoring transparency and efficiency within the department.

Lourens acknowledged growing frustration among citizens still waiting for responses to land applications, but stressed that reforms of this magnitude inevitably require time.

He also called on political actors and community organizations to contribute constructive proposals rather than increasing public tension and distrust. According to Lourens, Curaçao needs stability, hope and long-term solutions rather than political confrontation.

The comments come amid mounting public debate over Domeinbeheer and increasing pressure on the government regarding land distribution, delays and access to government land.
