WILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Economic Development (MEO) and the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) have launched a broad and transparent consultation process to discuss the findings of Curaçao's Tourism Carrying Capacity Study with stakeholders and the wider community.
The initiative, which began in June, marks the next phase in developing a tourism sector that continues to drive economic growth while safeguarding the island's quality of life and long-term sustainability.
Tourism remains one of the main pillars of Curaçao's economy. According to MEO, the strong growth experienced in recent years is a success that must be carefully managed to ensure it remains sustainable. The carrying capacity study provides insight into the impact of tourism growth on the island's infrastructure, natural environment, public services, and local communities. Authorities now aim to determine, together with stakeholders, how Curaçao can continue to grow in a balanced and responsible manner.
As part of this effort, MEO and CTB have initiated a co-creation process that actively involves key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors. The first consultation session took place on Friday, July 17, bringing together organizations whose expertise can help translate the study's recommendations into practical policy measures. A broader dialogue with the general public will follow in the next phase of the process.
Minister Middelhof stressed the importance of openness and collaboration throughout the consultations.
"The process must be characterized by transparency, inclusiveness, and cooperation. The goal is not only to analyze the results of the study but, above all, to work together with stakeholders and the community to make decisions that are in the best interest of everyone in Curaçao. Sustainable tourism must remain a shared responsibility," the minister said.
Through this initiative, Minister Middelhof and the Ministry of Economic Development reaffirm their commitment to building a strong, responsible, and resilient tourism industry that grows in harmony with Curaçao's economy, its people, and its environment.
The consultation process is expected to help shape future tourism policies as Curaçao seeks to balance continued visitor growth with the protection of its natural resources and the well-being of its residents.
