WILLEMSTAD – MAN parliamentarian Suzanne Camelia-Römer has also directed 15 written questions to Justice Minister Shalten Hato regarding the criminal investigation into the controversial cancellation of tax debts dating from 2017 and earlier.
According to MAN-PIN, the Public Prosecution Service launched a factual investigation into the role of the Finance Ministry in December 2024 and indicated in 2025 that it would await the outcome of the Dutch Supreme Court's ruling before determining the next steps.
Following that ruling earlier this month, Camelia-Römer is seeking clarification on how the Ministry of Justice intends to address any possible corruption or criminal offenses that may have been committed by a government minister.
The parliamentarian is also asking whether the Justice Minister has been informed of the current status of the investigation into what MAN-PIN describes as the cancellation of approximately ANG 3.2 billion in tax debts.
According to the opposition party, the case raises serious concerns about legal certainty and public confidence in government. It argues that citizens who received official tax statements showing a zero balance reasonably believed their debts had been forgiven, only to now face the possibility that the Tax Collector could still seek payment.
MAN-PIN says it expects both the Finance and Justice ministers to provide detailed answers, arguing that the issue involves not only political accountability but also administrative, legal, criminal and parliamentary responsibility.
