WILLEMSTAD – A delegation from the opposition party MAN-PIN traveled to Bogotá, Colombia, to observe the country's presidential election, describing the voting process as democratic and orderly.

The delegation consisted of Member of Parliament Suzanne Camelia-Römer and parliamentary staff member Yaël Plet, who participated as international election observers during the closely watched vote.

According to the delegation, the election process unfolded smoothly and reflected democratic principles despite a highly competitive race.

The election was narrowly won by right-wing attorney Abelardo de la Espriella, who is known as an admirer of U.S. President Donald Trump. Following the announcement of the results, Trump congratulated De la Espriella on social media, describing the outcome as a convincing victory.

Official results showed De la Espriella receiving more than 49 percent of the vote. However, the election remains politically contentious, with his left-wing opponent reportedly refusing to concede due to the narrow margin separating the candidates.

The Colombian election also attracted interest among Colombians living abroad, including those residing in Curaçao. Voting on the island took place at the Courtyard Marriott hotel in Otrobanda, where De la Espriella received strong support. According to the reported results, 72 percent of voters who cast ballots at the Curaçao polling station backed the right-wing candidate.

The election outcome marks a significant political shift in Colombia and is expected to influence the country's domestic and international policies in the coming years. Meanwhile, the MAN-PIN delegation said its participation as observers provided an opportunity to witness firsthand how another democratic nation conducts a closely contested presidential election.
