Majority Accepts Children of Migrants as ‘Yu di Kòrsou’

WILLEMSTAD – Children of migrants who are born and raised on Curaçao are widely accepted as part of the national community, according to new research by Central Bureau of Statistics Curaçao (CBS).

The 2025 Social Survey shows that 77.1 percent of residents consider these children to be “Yu di Kòrsou.” This confirms that national identity on the island is not limited only to ancestry, but also includes people who grow up within Curaçao’s society.

However, the percentage is lower than in 2015, when 84 percent of respondents held that view.

CBS notes that while the majority remains inclusive, the decline suggests that views on belonging and identity have shifted somewhat over the past decade.

The study also found that long-term residence alone carries less weight. In 2025, 45.2 percent said a migrant who has lived on Curaçao for more than 15 years should be considered “Yu di Kòrsou,” down from 54.9 percent in 2015.
