WILLEMSTAD – Volunteers from the Kunuku Man cleanup initiative collected 163 kilograms of litter along the Santa Rosa Road on Sunday, once again highlighting the ongoing challenge of illegal littering on Curaçao.
According to a social media post by the organization, the latest cleanup targeted a stretch of the busy roadway, where volunteers removed dozens of kilograms of recyclable materials and nearly 100 kilograms of general waste.
The cleanup team collected:
- 51 kilograms of empty beer bottles
- 4 kilograms of aluminum cans
- 9 kilograms of plastic bottles
- 99 kilograms of non-recyclable waste
In total, the volunteers removed 163 kilograms of trash from the roadside.
The collected glass, aluminum and plastic will be donated to Rescue Paws Curaçao through the organization's recycling efforts, allowing the animal rescue foundation to benefit from the proceeds generated by the recyclable materials.
The cleanup comes just weeks before the official launch of Kunuku Man Recycle, scheduled for the first week of August. The new recycling initiative will allow residents to exchange glass bottles, plastic bottles and aluminum cans for cash, with organizers hoping the financial incentive will encourage more people to recycle instead of littering.
In its message to the community, Kunuku Man urged residents to stop throwing waste along roadsides and in public spaces.
"Stop throwing everything outside," the organization wrote. "Bring your glass, plastic bottles and aluminum cans for recycling and receive money in return. And, of course, take the rest of your waste home and dispose of it in your own trash bin."
The group also expressed its appreciation to the volunteers who participated in Sunday's cleanup, thanking them for their continued commitment to keeping Curaçao clean.
Kunuku Man has become one of the island's most visible grassroots environmental initiatives, organizing regular roadside cleanups while promoting recycling and greater public awareness about litter and waste management.
