WILLEMSTAD – KFC’s Brievengat and Santa Maria locations will temporarily operate on a cashless basis following the recent burglaries that targeted both restaurants.
KFC Curaçao announced that customers at the two locations will only be able to pay by debit or credit card. Cash payments will not be accepted for the time being.
The temporary cashless policy applies exclusively to KFC Brievengat and KFC Santa Maria and comes shortly after both restaurants were targeted in burglaries early Monday morning.
The two locations were initially closed until further notice following the break-ins. Parent company Hucor Holding said at the time that the closures were necessary because of the ongoing investigation and to protect employees.
During the burglaries, thieves entered both restaurants and stole four safes containing proceeds from the weekend. Authorities suspect the crimes were carefully planned. At the Santa Maria location, the perpetrators reportedly managed to disable the alarm siren.
Investigators are also looking into whether heavy-duty firefighting equipment stolen earlier this month from the fire station in Bandabou was used to gain access to the restaurants. Police have been reviewing surveillance footage as part of the investigation.
The introduction of cashless payments at the two affected locations appears to be an additional security measure following the thefts. KFC’s announcement does not indicate how long the policy will remain in effect.
Other KFC locations on Curaçao are not included in the measure and will continue operating under their regular payment arrangements.
KFC Curaçao operates several restaurants across the island, including locations in Saliña, Colon, Punda, Brionplein and Santa Rosa in addition to Brievengat and Santa Maria.
