Kaya Kaya Transforms Otrobanda Image, Report Shows Shift in Perception

Local, Entertainment, | By Correspondent March 24, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Kaya Kaya movement is playing a growing role in reshaping how Otrobanda is perceived, with a new impact report pointing to a clear shift from stigma to pride and everyday use of the historic district.

According to the 2025 impact report, Otrobanda is increasingly being experienced as a vibrant and creative area rather than a neighborhood people avoid. Studies referenced in the report show that cultural activation of public spaces has been a key driver behind this change, with events and artistic interventions helping to redefine the district’s identity.

Kaya Kaya, which started in 2018 as a community street party, has evolved into a year-round movement focused on culture, creativity and community engagement. Through festivals, markets, art projects and public space interventions, the initiative has turned streets and buildings into spaces of connection and shared pride.

The report highlights that impact is not measured by single events but by repeated activity and long-term presence. Residents and visitors report feeling safer and more inclined to spend time in Otrobanda when activities are taking place, contributing to a broader change in how the area is experienced.

This transformation is reflected across three key areas: improved public space and liveability, increased creative and economic opportunities, and a stronger sense of belonging and engagement within the community.

Kaya Kaya’s approach is based on co-creation, involving residents, artists, entrepreneurs and partners as active contributors. By building on local talent and stories, the initiative aims to strengthen Otrobanda from within rather than relying on external development models.

The report concludes that while progress is visible, lasting change depends on continued investment, collaboration and long-term commitment to community-driven development.
