WILLEMSTAD – Minister of Justice Shalten Hato has described the situation at the juvenile detention center JJIC as “very concerning” following a visit to the facility, prompted by reports of unrest and poor living conditions among residents.

The visit comes after an incident on Monday evening in which a group of youths reportedly revolted inside the institution. According to initial reports, several youths managed to escape while staff struggled to maintain control.

The unrest was reportedly fueled by complaints from the youths about a lack of basic necessities. These included insufficient and inadequate food, as well as shortages of essential items such as toilet paper and soap. There were also reports that female residents were not being provided with sanitary products.

Hato called the situation “deeply regrettable,” emphasizing that the youths are placed in the institution due to unsafe home environments and should instead be receiving care in a secure and stable setting.

“We must ensure that this is a safe place where they receive the necessary guidance and support,” the minister stated.

During his visit, Hato held discussions with both the youths and the management of the facility. He stressed that all residents are entitled to basic provisions and professional care, and indicated that steps must be taken to address the reported shortcomings.
