Joint Court Expands Caribbeanization Effort to Train More Local Judges and Prosecutors

Local, | By Correspondent May 26, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Joint Court of Justice says it is intensifying efforts to recruit and train more Caribbean legal professionals to become judges and public prosecutors.

According to the Court’s Annual Report 2025, a revised selection procedure introduced in 2024 is now being used to identify candidates with both legal expertise and strong social understanding of Caribbean societies.

The raio training program, which prepares local legal professionals for judicial careers, lasts four and a half years. Candidates must have at least four years of legal work experience and demonstrate involvement in Caribbean society through volunteer work, public service or other social engagement.

Two selection committees, including representatives from the Court, Public Prosecutor’s Offices and universities in Curaçao or Aruba, oversee the process.

Using the new procedure, three raio candidates and one trainee judge candidate were selected. The Court says recruitment efforts will continue annually as part of its Caribbeanization policy.
