Joint Court Develops AI Policy for Judges and Staff

Local, Caribbean, | By Correspondent May 26, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Joint Court of Justice has begun developing an artificial intelligence policy and code of conduct for judges and court staff as part of growing efforts to address the impact of AI on the judiciary.

The issue was discussed extensively during the Court’s annual Knowledge Week in 2025, where workshops focused on AI technology, the use of AI by litigants and the possible use of AI within the judicial system itself.

Following those sessions, a working group drafted a policy framework and code of conduct based on ethical and legal principles rather than rigid rules. According to the Court, rapid technological developments make strict regulations vulnerable to becoming outdated quickly.

The proposed framework focuses on principles such as judicial independence, transparency, impartiality, non-discrimination and protection of the rule of law.

The draft policy has now been submitted to the Court’s board for further review.
