Job Insecurity, Disabilities and Digital Exclusion Drive Poverty in Curaçao

Local, | By Correspondent February 16, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Job insecurity, disabilities and limited access to information and communication technology are the three largest contributors to multidimensional poverty in Curaçao, according to the latest CBS analysis.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index shows that the quality of work, particularly the prevalence of temporary and non-permanent contracts, has consistently been a major driver of deprivation. In 2023, disabilities within households emerged as the single largest contributor to the national MPI score.

Limited access to digital tools and internet connectivity remains another key factor. Despite the growing importance of online access for education, employment and public services, a significant share of households still lacks adequate ICT resources.

CBS emphasizes that improvements in basic utilities such as electricity, water and sanitation have largely been achieved, shifting the focus of poverty reduction toward labour market stability, social protection and digital inclusion.
