Jewish Museum launches education program to bring history, freedom and identity into Curaçao classrooms

WILLEMSTAD – Schools across Curaçao are being invited to bring students face-to-face with history as the Jewish Museum Curaçao expands its educational outreach with interactive learning programs focused on freedom, identity and historical awareness.

The museum is now opening registrations for class visits, offering students guided educational experiences built around some of the most powerful historical stories connected to both Curaçao and the wider world.

At the center of the new program are three educational modules: one on Anne Frank, one on Curaçao-born war hero George Maduro, and another exploring Jewish identity and heritage.

The lessons are designed for multiple educational levels and align with subjects such as citizenship education and history.

According to the museum, the goal is not simply to teach facts, but to engage students in active reflection.

During the visits, students are encouraged to participate in discussions, ask questions and think critically about themes such as discrimination, courage, identity and personal responsibility.

The museum says the programs are designed to connect local history with global events, particularly the legacy of World War II and its lessons for today.

One of the key educational focuses is the story of George Maduro, the Curaçao-born resistance hero who fought against Nazi occupation in the Netherlands and whose legacy remains a symbol of courage and sacrifice. The museum recently expanded its educational materials around his life.

The Anne Frank module, meanwhile, explores not only her life and writings but also broader themes of discrimination, exclusion and freedom—topics that remain highly relevant in modern society. The museum’s Anne Frank exhibition was introduced as part of its recent expansion and includes local connections to Curaçao.

Museum officials say the educational modules aim to increase awareness and involvement among young people by linking historical stories to present-day social challenges.

By doing so, the museum hopes students will better understand how history continues to shape society and the importance of protecting democratic values and human rights.

Schools interested in participating can register their classes through the museum’s online reservation system.
