WILLEMSTAD – Jeritza Vivas has been named the recipient of the 2026 Cola Debrot Prize in the discipline of dance, with a special focus on folkloric dance.

The nomination was submitted by the Konseho Kultural Korsou and officially approved by the Council of Ministers on April 22. The award ceremony took place on May 4 at the Governor’s Palace in Curaçao and was organized by the Culture and Sports Implementation Organization.

According to the jury, Vivas has shown exceptional dedication over many years to the development, preservation, and renewal of Curaçao’s folkloric dance heritage. Since 2011, she has played a significant and consistent role in the sector, particularly through her involvement with SKOBA.

The jury highlighted her long-term commitment to safeguarding traditional dance forms such as waltz, tumba, tambú, mazurka, and seú, while successfully balancing authenticity with innovation.

Vivas was also recognized for her work as a dance instructor, training new generations of dancers and actively involving young people in Curaçao’s cultural sector. Her role as a choreographer was praised for helping maintain artistic quality and supporting the continued evolution of folkloric dance on the island.

Beyond her artistic work, the jury commended her organizational skills, including her role in coordinating dance competitions and public cultural events that have helped increase the visibility of folkloric dance.

Her efforts as a cultural entrepreneur, including fundraising initiatives and gala events aimed at ensuring financial sustainability for cultural projects, were also cited as key achievements.

The jury further emphasized her role as a bridge-builder in society, bringing together multiple generations through dance and contributing to social cohesion and cultural identity.

Officials said her impact extends far beyond performance, helping strengthen Curaçao’s cultural identity and preserving both tangible and intangible heritage.

The award was presented by Minister of Social Development, Labour and Welfare Charetti America, Minister of Justice Shalten Hato, and Governor Maurits de Kort.
