WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s national league champions Inter Willemstad made a strong start at the CFU Club Shield tournament with an impressive 5-2 victory over St. John’s SC from Grenada on Sunday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.
Inter Willemstad took control of the match early and opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Ruensly Leuteria. The Curaçao side doubled its lead when Davidson Rosa converted a pass from Jurensley Martina.
Leuteria continued his strong performance by scoring his second goal of the match, before Martina added a fourth goal for Inter Willemstad shortly before halftime, giving the Curaçao champions a comfortable advantage heading into the break.
The second half saw Inter Willemstad maintain control of the match. St. John’s SC was reduced to ten players after receiving a red card, making a comeback even more difficult for the Grenadian side.
Substitute Johan Petronilla Lopez completed the scoring for Inter Willemstad in the 69th minute, putting the match beyond doubt. St. John’s managed to score a second goal in stoppage time, but the final whistle confirmed a convincing 5-2 victory for the Curaçao champions.
With the win, Inter Willemstad secured a place among the final eight teams of the CFU Club Shield, an annual tournament featuring champions from regional competitions across the Caribbean, including semi-professional and amateur clubs.
The CFU Club Shield was launched in 2018 and is organized by the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) as a platform to give clubs from across the region international competition experience. Inter Willemstad’s strong opening performance keeps Curaçao in the race for the tournament title.
