WILLEMSTAD – The World Meteorological Organization has removed the name “Melissa” from the official list of hurricane names after the storm caused significant destruction and loss of life in the Caribbean last year. The announcement was confirmed by the Meteorological Service Curaçao.
Hurricane Melissa passed through the Caribbean region in October 2025, leaving widespread damage in several areas. Because of the severe impact of the storm, the Hurricane Committee decided that the name should not be used again in future hurricane seasons.
When a storm causes major casualties or destruction, the World Meteorological Organization may retire the name to avoid confusion and out of respect for those affected.
As a replacement, the name “Molly” has been selected. According to the Meteorological Service Curaçao, the new name will be added to the rotating list of hurricane names designated for the Atlantic hurricane season of 2031.
