THE HAGUE – The Netherlands’ Human Rights, Democracy and International Legal Order Report 2025 identifies equal rights, freedom of expression and protection of vulnerable groups as key priorities that also apply to the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, including Curaçao.
The report describes human rights protection as a shared responsibility within the Kingdom and notes that cooperation between the Netherlands and the Caribbean countries and islands remains important to strengthen democratic institutions and legal protections.
One of the areas receiving attention is freedom of expression and media freedom. The Netherlands states that independent journalism is essential for democracy and continues to support journalists and media organizations internationally through programs aimed at protecting press freedom.
The report also focuses on protecting the space for civil society organizations and human rights defenders. It notes that governments must maintain room for citizens and organizations to participate freely in public debate.
For the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, these issues are relevant as Curaçao and the other islands continue discussions about governance, transparency and the relationship between government institutions and society.
The report also highlights the importance of equal treatment and protection against discrimination. The Netherlands continues to support international initiatives promoting equal rights for women, girls and LGBTQ+ persons, while recognizing that progress requires cooperation between governments and communities.
According to the report, strengthening human rights is not only a legal obligation but also an investment in democratic resilience and social stability.
For Curaçao and the Dutch Caribbean, the message from the report is clear: international agreements must be translated into effective protection for residents, with strong institutions, accountability and respect for fundamental rights at the center.
