Local, | By Correspondent November 3, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The fountain at Julianaplein in Willemstad will officially reopen on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during a ceremony organized by utility company Aqualectra. Curaçao Governor Mauritsz de Kort is expected to attend the event, which will mark the return of the fountain as a feature of the city's public space.

The reopening ceremony is scheduled to take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will bring together government officials and representatives of Curaçao Parliament.

The event was announced in an invitation dated October 31, sent by Aqualectra Director Neysa Isenia to Parliament President Fergino Brownbill and the leaders of the political factions represented in Curaçao Parliament.

Among those invited are MFK representative David Seferina, MAN-PIN faction leader Giselle Mc William, PAR leader Quincy Girigorie, and PNP representative Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia.

Aqualectra described the reopening as a special occasion and expressed hope that the invited officials would be able to attend despite the relatively short notice.

Fountain Previously Included in City Improvement Plans

The Julianaplein fountain has previously been identified as one of several public landmarks requiring maintenance as part of efforts to improve the appearance of Willemstad.

In January 2023, the Curaçao Revitalization Foundation (CRF) announced plans to clean and maintain various historical locations, monuments, and fountains throughout the city.

The fountain at Julianaplein was among the locations identified for attention.

Other sites included in those earlier plans were Ruyterkade, Plaza Hoyer, and the historic City Hall.

The initiative formed part of broader efforts to preserve Willemstad's public spaces and maintain landmarks that contribute to the city's historical character.

The invitation for Wednesday's ceremony does not specify the full scope of the work carried out on the Julianaplein fountain, the costs involved, or whether the restoration was directly connected to the earlier CRF initiative.

Public Landmark Returns to Willemstad

The reopening represents another development in the ongoing attention being given to the maintenance and appearance of public spaces in Curaçao's capital.

Fountains, monuments, and historical squares contribute to the character of Willemstad and form part of the urban environment experienced by residents and visitors.

The participation of Governor De Kort and the invitation extended to parliamentary representatives underscore the ceremonial significance Aqualectra has attached to the occasion.

Wednesday evening's event will officially mark the fountain's return to use, although further details about its future maintenance and operation have not yet been announced.
