Healthcare Reform: Controlling Costs Without Harming Access

Local, | By Correspondent February 12, 2026

THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD – Healthcare reform under the Landspakket (Country’s Economic Reforms) shows partial progress, but the structural overhaul remains incomplete.

Generic medicine registration has been simplified, potentially reducing pharmaceutical costs. This is a tangible achievement.

But broader system reform is still in development.

The Sensitive Core

An independent evaluation of the basic insurance package is being prepared.

This is politically delicate.

Any adjustment affects:

• Coverage scope
• Vulnerable groups
• Premium balance
• Government subsidies

Healthcare consumes a large share of the public budget. Without reform, spending may crowd out investments elsewhere.

Regulatory Reform

The proposed Curaçao Healthcare Authority aims to regulate the healthcare market more professionally.

If implemented properly, it could:

• Improve cost transparency
• Prevent market distortions
• Strengthen oversight

Healthcare reform directly affects every household.

It is not optional.
