WILLEMSTAD – Justice Minister Shalten Hato says establishing a formal police post at Curaçao International Airport remains a priority, even though police officers are already permanently deployed at the airport for border control, supervision and security.
According to information presented to the Curaçao Parliament, personnel from the Curaçao Police Force (KPC) are already structurally assigned to the airport. Civilian KPC employees are also being used to assist with the processing of arriving and departing passengers.
Despite this permanent police presence, the airport does not yet have a formally established police station.
Hato confirmed that the government intends to create such a facility and said he will continue to give the project priority. However, several organizational and employment-related matters must first be resolved before the police post can be formally established.
The development comes as Curaçao continues to strengthen border controls at the airport. In 2025, financial assistance from the Netherlands was used to invest in new equipment, personnel training and systems for the advance screening of passenger information.
These systems allow authorities to assess passenger information before travelers arrive in Curaçao, strengthening the ability of border authorities to identify potential immigration or security concerns in advance.
At the same time, border-control operations continue to face personnel shortages. This has contributed to the deployment of civilian police employees to assist with passenger immigration processing.
Hato has not provided a date for the opening of the permanent airport police post. According to the minister, the necessary organizational structure and employment conditions must first be worked out before the facility can formally begin operating.
