Growing Vulnerability: More Curaçao Households at Risk of Poverty

Local, Economy, | By Correspondent April 23, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – A growing number of households in Curaçao are at risk of falling into poverty, according to a new analysis of multidimensional poverty trends.

The report shows that the share of households classified as “vulnerable” increased significantly, rising from 29.6 percent in 2011 to 37.7 percent in 2023.

At the same time, the percentage of households with no deprivation dropped from 63 percent to just over 51 percent during the same period.

Experts warn that this trend signals a widening group of households living on the edge, vulnerable to economic shocks such as rising living costs or job loss.

The findings underline the need for preventive policies aimed not only at those already in poverty, but also at those at risk of slipping into it.
