Green Force Reaches 3 Million Kilo Recycling Milestone on Earth Day, Calls for Stronger Action on Plastic Waste

Local, | By Press release April 21, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Environmental organization Green Force has reached a major milestone on Curaçao, announcing that it has processed and exported 3 million kilograms of recyclable materials, marking a significant step toward a more sustainable future for the island.

The achievement, highlighted around Earth Day, reflects years of effort to reduce waste and improve recycling practices. Among the results is the removal of approximately 9.5 million plastic PET bottles from the island, all of which have been exported for recycling and reuse.

Green Force credited the milestone to the collective efforts of partners, businesses, and residents who actively participate in recycling. The organization emphasized that the progress demonstrates what can be achieved through consistent collaboration and commitment to environmental responsibility.

Despite the progress, the organization warned that much more needs to be done. Green Force is calling on the government to take decisive action against plastic waste, including long-delayed legislation on single-use plastics. According to the organization, discussions around such a law have been ongoing for more than 16 years without concrete implementation.

The group is also advocating for a ban on the production and import of colored PET bottles, arguing that current delays are having a growing negative impact on the environment, the island’s image, and overall quality of life. Increased tourism and limitations in waste management systems are further intensifying the pressure.

Green Force says it will continue expanding its recycling efforts but stressed that broader policy support is essential to achieve lasting change. The organization is urging the public to remain engaged and to continue contributing to recycling initiatives across the island.

Residents seeking more information on how and where to recycle can find guidance through Green Force’s social media channels.
