Governor discusses Curaçao’s digital future with Blue NAP CEO Giovanni King

Local, Technology, | By Press release April 29, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s Governor Mauritsz de Kort has met with Giovanni King to discuss the island’s digital future and the growing role of data infrastructure in shaping Curaçao’s economic development.

The meeting took place on April 23 and focused on the strategic role of Blue NAP Americas (BNA), where King serves as Chief Executive Officer, as well as his role as chairman of the Caribbean Datacenter Association (CDA).

According to the Governor’s Office, the discussion centered on the importance of strengthening Curaçao’s position in the regional digital economy and the opportunities that come with expanding digital infrastructure.

A key topic was Blue NAP’s strategic position as the only Tier IV, or Rated-4, data center in the Caribbean region and one of only two such facilities within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Tier IV certification represents the highest international standard for data center reliability, security and operational continuity, making Curaçao an increasingly important player in regional data storage and digital services.

Blue NAP aims to further expand its role as an “anchor data center” for the Caribbean, positioning the island as a central digital infrastructure hub for regional and international operations.

At the same time, the Caribbean Datacenter Association is working to build a regional network of interconnected data centers, with the goal of supporting digital transformation across the Caribbean.

The meeting also highlighted the growing importance of developing a fourth economic pillar for Curaçao, focused on the digital economy.

Traditionally, Curaçao’s economy has relied heavily on tourism, financial services and logistics, but digital infrastructure and technology are increasingly being viewed as a new strategic growth sector.

Particular attention was given to the concept of data sovereignty — the principle that countries should maintain control over data generated within their borders.

According to the Governor’s Office, this is becoming increasingly important in protecting national interests while still allowing room for regional and international cooperation.

The discussion also touched on the legal framework for data protection.

Both sides stressed the importance of strengthening legislation on personal data privacy and ensuring effective enforcement mechanisms.

Officials noted that modern and reliable data protection laws are essential for building trust, attracting international investment and positioning Curaçao as a secure and credible digital hub in the Caribbean.

The meeting reflects growing efforts to place digital transformation higher on Curaçao’s economic agenda as the island seeks to diversify its economy and strengthen its role in the region’s evolving technology sector.
