WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao government says future developments around the 2BAYS area could create new opportunities for high-skilled employment, particularly in technical, maritime and industrial sectors.
Minister of Economic Development Roderick Middelhof said the planned expansion of maritime and industrial activities must be accompanied by investments in local talent so that residents can benefit from the economic growth expected from the area.
Potential future jobs include positions for certified welders, mechanical engineers, laboratory technicians, engineers, maintenance specialists, maritime professionals and employees in quality control and logistics.
In addition to direct employment, the developments are expected to create indirect jobs among local contractors, transportation companies, suppliers, security companies, training institutions and business service providers.
Middelhof said it is essential that local workers and young people are prepared in advance for the opportunities that may emerge. Through the Maritime Programmatic Table and cooperation with private port companies and training partners, 2BAYS will work on specialized courses, practical training and certification programs.
“We must prevent new economic opportunities from emerging without our own people being sufficiently prepared to benefit from them,” the minister stated.
The government believes the combination of existing infrastructure, private investment and workforce development can help create a sustainable industrial ecosystem on Curaçao.
Middelhof also highlighted the importance of connecting education with economic development. According to him, the future success of projects around 2BAYS depends not only on infrastructure and investments but also on developing the skills required by future industries.
The government’s broader objective is to use the 2BAYS area as part of a larger economic corridor where maritime services, logistics, industrial activities, energy, innovation and training reinforce one another.
Middelhof said that by developing these initiatives in a coordinated manner, Curaçao can strengthen its industrial capacity, diversify its economy and create more sustainable employment opportunities for future generations.
